In Memory of Professor Harold J. Berman It is with extreme sorrow that we announce the passing of a member of the expert council of the magazine Representative Power: XXI Century, Harold Joseph Berman. He died on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 in New York City, at the age of 89.
Professor Berman recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of his teaching career; he considered his profession to be his calling. He was the first Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Law at Emory University, where he remained for over 20 years as an instructor, scholar, colleague and mentor to many students. He was also the James Barr Ames Professor of Law at Harvard University – the highest position at the Harvard law School, where he taught from 1948 to 1985. His articles, published in our magazine, always attracted the interest of readers and were topics of discussion both in the pages of the magazine and on our forum.
 At the initiative of the editor in chief of Representative Power: XXI Century, Professor Harold J. Berman has post humorously been bestowed with an important international award, the medal "in the name of life on earth," for his active participation in the development of the magazine.
As a giant in his field, Professor Berman left an impressive and long-lasting contribution as a legal scholar. He had a particular interest in international law and he is considered one of the founders of the study of law and religion. At Emory University, he was the director of the Institute of International Law and one of the representatives of Carter Center, as well as one of the founders of the “Law and Religion” programs at the Emory Law School, which is now called the Center for the Study of Law and Religion.
Professor Berman’s passing is a great loss to our magazine, its readers (both in Russia and abroad), to legal scholars and students at Emory University, and to the entire world. He will be remembered among us.
